2010-2011 Season
Mostly Mozart!
The
Western New York Chamber Orchestra celebrates the music of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart this season with representative works from his symphonic,
instrumental choral and operatic compositions. Each concert will feature a
major work by the composer including the Requiem and the delightful
opera, Così fan tutte. The
Fredonia College Choir, faculty soloists and some of the most talented
vocal students from the school will join the orchestra for a season
filled with music jewels from the great Mozart’s crown!

Season opens with
Summer
Serenade
Sunday, September 19, 2010
Enjoy the last few days of summer while listening to these
two amazing classics! Serenades were originally occasional pieces meant to
be played outdoors in the late afternoon or evening. You can enjoy the
Mozart’s famous Gran Partita (used for the sound track of Amadeus)
and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Serenade for Strings in the comfort of
King Concert Hall. Come and hear the sizzling strings and stunning winds
of WNYCO present these two incredible works.

New Faces!
After
27 years the Western New York
Chamber Orchestra (WNYCO) (formerly the Fredonia Chamber Players) is
taking on a whole new look - administratively speaking at least. Founding
member Jay East, who served as the Executive
Director of the ensemble for
all its 27 years, retired from the position in May. While at SUNY
Fredonia, Jay also served a long tenure as Professor of Clarinet in the
School of Music. The Executive Director position will be replaced by a
married tandem of Laura Koepke, currently Professor of Bassoon in the
School of Music, together with her husband, Jordan Frazier, a string bass
player with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Also
changing roles is President of the Board of Directors. School of Music
voice faculty member, Julie Newell, ended her term after seven years. She
is replaced by Sandy Rotunda, a Fredonia native and businessman, who has a
long family heritage with the School of Music. Sandy’s Mom and two sisters
are also School of Music alumni.
The Western New York Chamber Orchestra, a
professional ensemble in residence at SUNY Fredonia, has collaborated in
many wonderful concerts over its history, most recently and notably
hosting world-renowned artists Peter Schickele and Sharon Isben. Last
spring, the group completed a highly acclaimed series of performances of
Benjamin Britten’s opera Turn of the Screw with student singers
from the School of Music."
